Yet beneath the glittering surface, the court was a theater of intrigue and ambition. Chronicles and Persian histories detail the fierce rivalries between princes, ministers, and military leaders. The struggle for succession was a recurring theme, as the principle of primogeniture was frequently challenged by ambitious younger sons and influential royal consorts. By the close of the seventeenth century, the Rathores stood at the zenith of their power. Their fortresses commanded the desert, their courts dazzled visitors from across the subcontinent, and their alliances extended to the highest echelons of South Asian politics. Yet, as in the histories of all dynasties, the seeds of decline were already sown. The strains of succession, the shifting balance of power in Delhi, and the growing assertiveness of Marwar’s nobles all hinted at storms to come.
